SELDOM do you see the great Kerryn Manning get that excited about a race win.
Yet a masterful drive on wonder mare Ameretto earned her a stunning victory in tonight’s $100,000 Group One Benstud Queen Of The Pacific, beating her arch-rival Berisari and Rockstar Angel.
It was a case of pegs-pegs-pegs for the first three placegetters as that was the place to be at Tabcorp Park Melton.
Manning easily won the start with Ameretto from her ideal draw in gate one while the in-form Berisari, her conqueror last week was posted three wide before Nathan Jack eventually worked his way up outside of Ameretto then pushed on the take the front running.
Manning seemed quite happy to bide her time until the sprint lane turning for home over the marathon 2760m journey.
But as they turned for home Ameretto was travelling so well that Manning had no hesitation pulling wide on the track and the marvellous mare soon rounded up the favourite and went on to score 5.4m win rating 1:57.2 for her last mile.
A disappointing seventh in the previous week’s Angelique Club Cup, Manning said the mare had actually pulled up a treaty from that disappointing performance and had been back to her best during the week.
“She loves a hard run, this horse,” said Manning.
“She was looking and feeling as good as she ever has this week so we knew she was ready to run a bold race.
“At one stage we thought we might not have time to get her ready but I’ve been really happy with her this week.
“A poured a bit more work into her and it really paid off tonight and she really paid us back with tonight’s run . . . she was just so strong.”
While the pegs was the place to be, Sydney visitor Angel In White disappointed connections, including Sydney racing journalist Paul Micallef and racecaller Anthony Manton when she dropped out to finish last after being given every chance by star reinsman Anthony Butt.
Ameretto’s owners Ryan and Ash Grives were on hand to witness the former Sydney’s mare’s victory and were quickly on track to give Manning the plaudits for another great drive for the acknowledged world’s best reinswoman.
