PROMINENT owner Merv Butterworth took a great deal of satisfaction from Mr Sundon’s win yesterday.
While Butterworth has enjoyed victories in prestigious events such as the A G Hunter and New Zealand Cups, Mr Sundon’s country success helped chalk up a milestone.
Trained by respected horseman Grant Campbell, Mr Sundon was driven by his wife, Kerryn Manning, who notched her 100th win for the season.
Although she has scaled back on her driving engagements from the days of setting national records, Manning remains a regular among the ‘centurions’.
In fact, Mr Sundon closed out Manning’s 17th ton!
“It was wonderful to see Mr Sundon bring up 100 wins for Kerryn,” Butterworth said. “She needs no introduction as far as what she has achieved in the sport, but getting another century is a great effort.
“Kerryn has been driving, and training, for us for many years now so it was pleasing to have her reach her latest 100 with one of ours.”
Overcoming a 50-metre back mark, Mr Sundon accounted for Penelope and Honey Please in 2:04.4 over 2200 metres.
“He hasn’t had a lot of luck lately, including handicaps, so it was good to see him get another win on the board,” Butterworth, who co-owns his team with his wife Meg, said.
“We’ve got nothing specific set out for him, just find the right races and see how he goes.”
