LEADING horseman Steve Turnbull is more than happy to admit he was wrong with Joes Star Of Mia.
After noticing the son of Roll With Joe was entered in last night’s free-for-all at Tabcorp Park Menangle, Turnbull figured it was a mistake – especially considering Joes Star Of Mia was an M1.
But before making an official inquiry into the stallion’s placement Turnbull questioned his daughter, Amanda, who confirmed she nominated Joes Star Of Mia for the open class event.
“I wasn’t convinced he should be in the free-for-all but Amanda said it would suit him better than the M1,” Turnbull said. “She felt the quicker pace would be in his favour and she was right…again!
“I guess I will have to start listening to the boss more often.”
With Amanda holding the reins Joes Star Of Mia was eased away from barrier eight as Shannonsablast, and then My Alpha Rock, set the pace.
Racing towards the tail of the field along the back straight, Joes Star Of Mia was the widest runner on the home turn before unleashing a scintillating sprint to score from My Alpha Rock and Loorim Creek.
Covering the mile in 1:50.3, the five-year-old remains unbeaten from three starts this season, taking his record to 13 wins and 16 placings from 40 starts for owner-breeder, John Starr.
“I thought if he could finish in the first three or four I would be happy,” Turnbull said. “But he just thrived on the way the race was run.
“When Amanda went to make her move another came out in front of her and he lost momentum, but once balanced, away he went.
“On that run I think it’s fair to say he can take the next step.”
