STEVE Turnbull, the master trainer, and driver has been elevated from champion to Club Menangle Legend.

Born at Bathurst on 17 August 1956, Steve is part of the famous ‘Turnbull’ dynasty from The Lagoon, being the third child of Tony Turnbull and his wife Shirley.

On Saturday night, Steve joined his father as a Club Menangle Legend during a wonderful gala event,

It was fierce rivalry when growing up with his older and late brother, Greg getting the jump start into the industry and of course his father, grandfather, and uncles’ successes.

His first horse, Radiant Group, provided him with his first Harold Park winner on 17 May 1974, following nine wins with the horse in the previous six months at Bathurst (4), Cowra, Dubbo, Lithgow, Penrith, and Blayney.

Steve Turnbull’s record and successes since have been outstanding.

On 13 occasions, Steve has trained a century of winners in a season, namely from 2005/06 to 2018/19.

He was Leading Trainer in NSW in 1993/94 (with brother Greg second and his father Tony in third) and repeated the following season, 1994/95 in NSW, this time with his father Tony second and brother Greg third.

He followed with the NSW Leading Trainer award in 2009/10 (134 winners), 2012/13 (199 wins), 2013/14 (217 wins) and 2016/17 (173 wins).

Steve was Leading Driver in NSW for the 1990/91 season (147 wins) and 1991/92 (100 winners).

Other notable feats including training seven winners at a race meeting (Parkes 29 December 2014), and training six winners at a meeting twice (Blayney 25 May 1991 and Bathurst 27 December 1993).

On four separate occasions he has driven five winners at a race meeting, at Parkes, Lithgow, Bathurst and on the latest occasion at Dubbo on 19 August 2018.

Many star performers have passed through his ‘Radiant Lodge’ stables at The Lagoon.

Smooth Satin was his all-time favourite. That memorable year of 2001 saw Smooth Satin capture the Inter Dominion Final, Miracle Mile, Chariots of Fire and Ben Hur all at Harold Park.

Smooth Satin had previously won the NSW Sires Final and NSW Sapling Stakes as a two-year-old and at 3 years, won the Three-Year-Old NSW Sires Stakes and RC Simpson Sprint.

Smooth Satin was to later capture the Gold Coast and Queensland Cups in 2003 in a magnificent race career, that resulted in 46 wins and 48 placings and prizemoney of $1,428,490.

Always high in his memory is the ‘Shirley Turnbull’ Memorial run annually at Bathurst to honour his late beloved mother, Shirley. Steve has proudly trained the winner of this important race seven times to date.

He has driven the winner of the race four times, namely Cocky Brother (1988), Red Chief (1993), Smooth Dixie (2001) and Slick Bromac (2009).

Steve has won a host of feature races all over the country.

His star performers feature wins have been: Awesome Belmer (16 wins – JD Watts Memorial, 4YO Breeders Challenge Regional Final and Sibelia Stakes), Fierce Allegiance (16 wins – Renshaw Cup), Im Blue Double Dee (27 wins – Mildura Cup and 2YO Tatlow Stakes), Sabilize (Newcastle Mile for trainer Brian Hancock), Forlove of the Game (Harold Park Golden Mile), Smooth Dixie (40 wins – Victorian 2YO Edgar Tatlow stakes), Conviction (22 wins – 2YO Breeders Challenge, Goulburn Cup, Cowra Cup), Four Trumps (47 wins and 47 placings – 2YO NSW Sires Stakes, 3YO RC Simpson Sprint, Bathurst Star Trek, Harold Park New Year Gift), Dinky Di (Christmas Gift), Royal Surprise (20 wins – Young Cup), Atomic Red (22 wins – Bathurst 3YO Gold Chalice, Hondo Grattan 4YO Stakes and Young Cup), Myra Dawn (19 wins – Red Ochre Mares at Dubbo), Windy Hill Tara (NSW Oaks) and drove Kiwi filly,

Dancingonmoonlight to win the 2000 NSW Oaks and Bathurst Gold Bracelet for trainer Steven Reid.

His hometown Gold Crown Carnival at Bathurst has seen Steve Turnbull drive Burrell to success to win the 2002 Gold Crown. He trained Pixies Palour to win the 2015 Two-Year-Old Gold Tiara.

The Bathurst Three-Year-Old Gold Chalice has seen success with Sunofagun, Mighty Gift and Atomic Red, while he trained Art Series to win the Three-Year-Old Gold Bracelet in 2018.

Other good feature race winners from his stable include Mouse In The House, Hes on the Track, Aurora Champ, Saint Veran, Pas De Cheval, Power Of Red, Oliviera, Im Desirable, while he scored feature wins as a driver aboard Strong Ambition and Dreammover.
