CHAMPION horseman Luke McCarthy will find himself in unfamiliar territory tonight.
McCarthy has 12 runners engaged at Club Menangle, including two in the main event – Hondo Grattan Stake.
Though he is no stranger to contesting – and winning – key features at the world class venue, McCarthy is in a different position this time around.
Usually connected to one of the leading chances, McCarthy’s duo are the rank outsiders!
Despite being a last start winner with a handy record of five victories and six placings from 17 outings, Waratah Lou is listed at $151 with TAB Fixed Odds.
To be driven by McCarthy ‘s father, John, Waratah Lou has drawn wide in barrier eight, but slots into six with the removal of the emergencies.
McCarthy has elected to partner Rocknroll Hammer from gate 11. The entire moves into nine once the emergencies are taken out of the equation.
Rocknroll Hammer is a half-brother to King Of Swing, which McCarthy reined to win a record three Miracle Miles.
Runner-up during his two runs from a spell, Rocknroll Hammer is paying $41.
“They are both good types in their own right,” McCarthy said. “It just shows the depth in quality they are up against.
“It’s not going to be easy and they will need luck, but with the right run they are capable of pulling off an upset.”
