AN INTRIGUING battle is brewing between two in-form stablemates.
Unbeaten from eight starts this season – including three Group Ones – Tornado Valley has claimed the title as the southern hemisphere’s best trotter.
A revelation since joining Andy Gath’s stable last year, Tornado Valley’s wins include the Inter Dominion, Bill Collins Trot, Australasian Grand Prix and tonight’s The Knight Pistol at Tabcorp Park Melton.
Naturally thrilled with the squaregaiter, Gath has set his sights on Tornado Valley’s Australasian Grand Prix title defence in Melton in a fortnight.
“He will go around in the Grand Prix next, which is the first big race he won at his third start for us,” Gath said. “He made his debut for us exactly 12 months ago today and has done an enormous job.
“It’s hard to say he is always impressive as he only does what he has to do, but he keeps getting the job done.”
The $100,000 feature has also been earmarked as Mclovin’s top shelf debut!
Becoming a member of Gath’s team last month, Mclovin is undefeated from three outings including Melton this evening.
“All his runs have been full of merit,” Gath said. “He is a really nice horse which works and performs at a high level.
“Whether he can beat Tornado Valley? He would have to draw better and get a bit of luck.
“But I guess we will find out in a couple of weeks.”
