COMEBACK pacer Bettermatch is expected to continue his impressive return to racing when he makes the long trek to Tabcorp Park Menangle on Saturday night.

One of New South Wales’ top freshmen, winning six of his seven starts, Bettermatch spent three years on the sidelines due to a breathing problem.

Third at Wagga on June 5 in his first run since May 2015, the Colin Thomas-trained stallion has won his three subsequent starts.

“We had a soft pallet operated performed on him twice but it didn’t work,” Thomas said. “So I put him in the paddock for few couple years.

“He just started roaring and breathing badly and for whatever reason didn’t respond to the operations.

“One day I decided to give him a try and he hasn’t looked like doing it since.

“Hopefully he can keep making up for lost time.”

One of the leading contenders in the Club Menangle Country Series Final, the son of Kenneth J has drawn barrier five, which should see his gate speed come into play according to Thomas.

“He got really good gate speed, so we will be using it from there,” Thomas said. “I’m very happy with his condition and he’s going to be in the finish for sure.

“Now it’s just a matter of the long trip to Menangle, which is about seven hours from Leeton, so hopefully he takes it in his stride.

“If he keeps improving the way he has been I’d like to think he can measure up to the country cups next season and then I will see if can progress to better races in town.”
