NEXT month’s New South Wales Trotters’ Carnival is on the hit list for handy trotter Sundons Comet.
An upset winner at Tabcorp Park Menangle last night, Sundons Comet will be aimed at “suitable races” according to co-trainer Joe Rando.
Rando prepares his team with his wife, Mary.
“There is no race for him next Saturday night, but we have the Trotters’ Carnival coming up, so whatever suitable races are there for him is what we will aim him at,” Rando said.
“With nothing on next week it will actually suit him as before last night he raced a fortnight ago and the two weeks between starts seems to have done him good.
“He did a bit of work a fortnight ago, so we decided to give him two weeks between runs and he has been thriving at home.
“I didn’t think he deserved to be at $28 on what he has been doing.”
Driven by David Morris, Sundons Comet settled midfield as Enjoy An Ale, Empire Bay and Tough Monarch worked to the lead.
Angled into the running line along the back straight, the eight-year-old was the widest runner on the home turn as his stablemate, Mighty Sunny, found the front.
Finishing stoutly along the straight, Sundons Comet sprinted to a two-metre win from Empire Bay, with All Royal Gal three-and-a-half metres away third.
“He was a little further back in the field than what I would’ve liked, but he got out in time,” Rando said. “It was a terrific drive by David to get off the pegs when he did.
“He seems to like to sprint down the middle of the track and we are very happy with the way he went.”
