A FAVOURABLE draw has placed Persimmon in a solid positioned to cause an upset in Bankstown on Friday night.
A handy fourth in last week’s Renshaw Cup in Penrith, Persimmon will tackle the M H Treuer Memorial for trainer Kevin Pizzuto.
Satisfied with the gelding’s latest effort Pizzuto believes Persimmon can upstage his more fancied rivals after drawing to lead from barrier two.
Persimmon will slot into the pole once the emergency it taken out of the equation.
“I’m happy with the draw,” Pizzuto said. “It gives him his chance to upset them.
“We have options from that draw so we’ll see what happens once they’re going.
“He went well the other day in the Renshaw and was still coming when others were getting tired.”
TAB Fixed Odds has the son of Courage Under Fire on the third line of betting at $10, with last week’s Cup winner, Ellmers Image, the $1.55 favourite from gate four.
Despite Ellmers Image’s strong form and short odds, Pizzuto regards Ignatius as the one to beat.
Widely-touted as a Grand Circuit performer in the making, Ignatius is the second elect at $4.40.
Drawn the middle of the back row, the son of Roll With Joe was runner-up behind Ellmers Image when first-up for nine weeks.
“Ellmers Image mind find it a bit tougher on that track,” Pizzuto said. “It suits a horse more like Ignatius, which is the one to beat as he’ll improve from last week.
“We’ll be giving it a good crack, but good luck to every runner as the winner will know they’ve earned it.”
