ELECTRIFYING youngster Ignatius joined a select group of pacers with his victory at Tabcorp Park Menangle last night.
Leading throughout from barrier seven, Ignatius captured the M0 event in a slick 1:53.3 over a mile.
As such the James Rattray-trained son of Roll With Joe became one of few three-year-olds to break their metropolitan maiden against older rivals.
A quick perusal through the records also suggests Ignatius is the first to achieve the feat around the 1400-metre circuit.
“I couldn’t be happier with the way he went, especially against the older horses,” Rattray said. “The way he does it is pretty impressive.
“He had an easy first half, but last 800 metres was solid and he got to the line with plenty in the tank.
“I don’t think it’s been done at Menangle and there are not many three-year-olds overall who have.”
With Rattray holding the reins, Ignatius was never fully extended as he cruised to a 10-metre win from The Golden Cross, with My Major Rocket two-and-a-half metres away third.
“I was going to settle him in the run from the draw, but he came out so well, I pushed on for the front,” Rattray said.
“He needed a hit out before tackling the Breeders’ Crown semis in a fortnight, which is why I chose this race.
“We will travel down for those next week and hopefully get into the Final at Melton.”
Unbeaten from 11 starts this season, Ignatius stretched his record to an impeccable 16 wins and a third from 17 starts for earnings of $279,934.
