Everyone is out there to win
IT’S all fun and games, but that doesn’t stop the competitive nature of each combatant shining through.
That’s how prominent horsewoman KerryAnn Morris described tomorrow night’s Lady Drivers’ Invitational at Club Menangle.
“These kinds of races are always a bit of fun,” Morris said. “That’s not to say the drivers aren’t out there to win and get the bragging rights.
“They are still very competitive as everyone is out there to win.”
A penalty-free event exclusive for a select line-up of reinswomen, the feature is part of a stellar card which includes the New South Wales Oaks, Ladyship Mile – known this year as the Queen Elizabeth II Mile – the Pink Bonnet and the Allied Express and Schweppes Sprints.
The latter two Group Ones are qualifiers for next week’s $1million Garrards Miracle Mile.
As for the Invitational, Morris has received a ‘plumb’ drive behind rising star Artillery.
Making a recent winning debut for premier trainer Belinda McCarthy, Artillery has drawn to lead throughout from the pole.
Pleased with her drive and hopeful of success, Morris was quick to point out another bonus the event offers.
“It’s always the luck of the draw with the ballot as to which horse you drive and I’ve done well this time,” Morris said.
“He looked impressive at his first start for Belinda a few weeks ago and he was sent to her after winning in Mildura for Paul Cavallaro.
“The best part of this race is no matter who wins it is a plus for the Teal Pants Team.”
Morris is referring to the campaign each reinswomen in Australia and New Zealand is undertaking to raise crucial funding and valuable awareness towards ovarian cancer research and education.
Between February 1 and March 15 the leading ladies wear teal pants with each state’s governing body, various principal clubs and the TAB combining to donate $400 to WomenCan per victory.
Western Australia has taken a different approach and is donating $15,000.
“The team has been doing a wonderful job again this year,” Morris said. “The tally is already close to 200 and we know for certain another win will be added to the list on Saturday night.
“I’m looking forward to being out there with the girls and wish everyone the best of luck.”
