MULTIPLE feature race winner Custodian will take the first step towards regaining his Breeders’ Crown title when he heads to Tabcorp Park Melton tomorrow night.

Successful in the two-year-old division of the futurity, Custodian missed last season’s Breeders’ Crown, which led to War Spirit capturing the Final.

War Spirit is among Custodian’s rivals this weekend in what will be the latter’s first start since last May.

War Spirit will begin from barrier two.

Despite the trotter’s lack of fitness, trainer Nathan Jack is positive Custodian can make a triumphant return.

“He has been working great,” Jack said. “I reckon it’s the best I’ve had him.

“He won his last two starts in May before he got a virus, but he’s well over that now and is ready to get back to where he left off.”

Adding to Jack’s confidence is Custodian’s draw, with the son of Muscle Mass drawn the pole.

A noted quick beginner, the four-year-old should have little trouble leading according to Jack.

“He’s got real good gate speed and I will be surprised if anything can cross him,” Jack said.

“While he is feeling terrific and has a great draw, it won’t be an easy task.

“Half the field are Group One winner and there isn’t one in the race that can’t win. I doubt the Crown Final will have much more depth!”
