First win along second comeback trail

WHAT better way to celebrate the anniversary of a victory then registering another!

Scoring at Globe Derby yesterday, Sir Lucas completed his first success since winning at the same venue last January.

In the gelding’s defence, he spent nine months on the sidelines as a result of a bowed tendon in his offside front leg.

Nursed back to health by trainer Clinton Fuller, Sir Lucas’s latest triumph came at his third start along the comeback trail.

“He bowed a tendon in the Gawler Cup last year and had to have six months off,” Fuller said. “After that there was a lot of rehab and jog work to build some strength into his legs.

“This is the second time he has comeback from that injury in the same leg, so we’re pretty lucky.

“He’s come back stronger and better than before and is bouncing around in his yard today.”

Driven by prominent reinswoman Tiana McMahon, Sir Lucas began badly from the standing start to be positioned towards the tail of the pack as Assassinator led the field in ‘Indian-file”.

Gaining a one-one trail at the bell, the son of Cullens Legacy was three-wide around the home bend before sprinting to a three-and-a-half metre win from Clarenden Envoy.

Culture King was a metre away third in 2:01.8 over 2230 metres.

“I was pleased with his run overall, though I would have liked him to begin better,” Fuller said.

“I won’t race him again now until the Italian Cup in a month.

“I don’t want to over race him as we’ve got to take every start as a bonus given his issues, so for now I keep him ticking along at home.”
