COLOURFUL trainer Kevin Pizzuto has made it clear he is bringing Tiger Tara to Melbourne with the long game in mind.
Set to contest Saturday night’s opening Inter Dominion heat at Tabcorp Park Melton with his stable star, Pizzuto stated Tiger Tara is there for the “main event, not the warm-up.”
To be conducted under the traditional format, the Championship consists of three rounds of heats in a week, followed by the Final a week later.
With the $500,000 decider his sole focus, Pizzuto has no plans of “breaking records” during the qualifiers.
“This week is only the first round, so I’m not spruiking him up yet,” Pizzuto said. “He’s ready to go and will be hard to beat, but I’m not setting him to be breaking records in the heats.
“We’re here for the Final…the main event, not the warm-up.”
Kept fresh since his New Zealand Free-For-All run a fortnight ago, Tiger Tara has been installed as a $2.60 favourite with TAB Fixed Odds after receiving barrier four.
Pleased with the draw, Pizzuto believes the stallion’s starting position gives driver Todd McCarthy “plenty of options”.
“He has freshened up nicely since his trip to New Zealand,” Pizzuto said. “I was stuffed after being there, so imagine him!
“Not having to be in Melbourne so early in the week after they altered the conditions has really helped to have him settled better at home.
“He’s worked up again nicely and will be ready to run a good race. The draw gives us plenty of options, so we’ll just see how it unfolds at the start.
“There will be a bit of speed inside him, so Todd will have to make a decision on Plan A, B or C when the time comes.”
