CONSISTENT performer Code Black is expected to be kept fresh ahead of another country cup assault.
Successful in today’s Maryborough Cup, Code Black has been aimed at Geelong’s flagship event by trainer Emma Stewart.
The Group Two is scheduled to be conducted on November 23.
“Depending on how he comes through this run he is likely to have a freshen-up now,” Stewart said. “That’s his fifth start in six weeks so a few easy days will do him good.
“We’re looking at the Geelong Cup with him next, so he may go into that fresh or have one lead-up start.
“We’ll just see how well he does between now and then.”
Driven by Greg Sugars, Code Black was settled towards the tail of the field from his second row draw as Cant Refuse led from barrier five.
Gaining a three-wide trail along the back stretch, the son of Bettors Delight worked the lead at the top of the home straight before staving off a late challenge from his stablemate Tell Me Tales to score by a short half-head.
Maraetai rounded out a Stewart-prepared trifecta when five metres away third.
“Code Black went really well,” Stewart said. “In fact, they all did.
“It was a good result for the stable and our owners.”
Rating 1:56.3 over 2690 metres, Code Black stretched his record to 18 wins and 22 placings from 71 starts for earnings of $296,535.
