EXCITING freshman Gimondi faces a daunting task as he seeks to maintain his perfect record at Tabcorp Park Menangle on Saturday night.

First-up since April 16 the trotter is engaged in the Foundation Series Final for trainer Blake Fitzpatrick.

Winner of his three starts, Gimondi was due to race at the world class venue three weeks ago but was scratched owing to an infection in his back leg.

“He had a bit of an infection in one of his legs, so I wasn’t going to take a risk with him,” Fitzpatrick said. “It took a little longer than I thought to get it right but it is there now.

“Thankfully he didn’t miss too much work and is in good shape for the weekend.

“He trialled well yesterday and I am really pleased with him.

“He’s had plenty of work at home and is ready to go. Being first-up for nine weeks shouldn’t worry him.”

To be driven by Fitzpatrick, the son of Peak Dnk will begin from barrier four in a boutique field of five.

Despite his perfect record the two-year-old is on the second line of betting at $2 with TAB Fixed Odds.

Also showing plenty of promise, Playboy In Paris is the $1.75 favourite for trainer Jason Grimson.

Playboy In Paris boasts two wins and two placings from four starts, with his defeats the result of his clashes with Gimondi.

Along with race fitness Playboy In Paris has the advantage of drawing gate three.

“Playboy In Paris has improved with every run and is clearly the one to beat,” Fitzpatrick said. “He’s quite a smart horse, has had a couple of starts since we met him last and has drawn inside us.

“It’s only a small field but will be a very interesting tactical race.”
