Greatest moment of my life

PROMINENT horseman Peter Russo channelled his inner Rocky Balboa when describing the “massive highlight” he just created.

After beating Apollo Creed to claim the heavyweight title, Balboa declared “except for my kid bein’ born, this is the greatest night in the history of my life.”

For Russo his championship moment was delivered by Mahomes winning a New South Wales Breeders’ Challenge True Blue Final at Club Menangle just moments ago.

“With the exception of marrying my beautiful wife (Krystal) and my children (Bronte and Beau) being born, this is the greatest moment of my life,” Russo said.

“To win a Group One is just an unbelievable feeling…I can’t even describe it.

“I’m quite emotional and it still hasn’t sunk in.”

With Jack Trainor in the cart, Mahomes began quickly from barrier eight to gain the ideal one-one trail as Tims A Trooper led and King Tiger worked hard in the ‘death seat’.

Taken three-wide around the home turn, the gelding sprinted to a nine-metre ‘touchdown’ from the pacemaker.

Foxy Dada was a neck away third.

Named after American football star Patrick Mahomes, the Australian Pacing Gold purchase covered the mile in 1:51.7 to take his record to 11 wins and three placings from 22 starts for earnings of $146,975.

“To me this is better than winning the Super Bowl,” Russo said. “He went terrific tonight, which he has done all season.

“To have my whole family here to watch, including my Dad Mick and father-in-law Dale, just tops it off.

“Dad and Dale help so much around the stable, I couldn’t do it without them.”
