Grimson one of only three Inter legends

TRAINING sensation Jason Grimson joined a pair of industry legends with his Inter Dominion victory at Albion Park last night.

The New South Wales-based Grimson had three runners in the elite field, but only needed one – freakish mare, Captains Mistress.

Leading throughout from barrier six, Captains Mistress produced a track record performance to score by a metre-and-a-half from champion pacer Leap To Fame.

Nyack was 13 metres away third, while Grimson drove Minos to a respectable fourth.

Rating a brilliant 1:51.8 over 2680 metres, Captains Mistress slashed a second from Leap To Fame’s track record set in the Group One The Blacks A Fake on July 27, 2024.

Grimson’s latest success in harness racing’s ‘Holy Grail’ makes him just the third trainer to win three Inter Dominions with different horses.

Grimson enjoyed his first taste of Inter Dominion glory in 2021 with Boncel Benjamin before registering his second with I Cast No Shadow the following year.

In a dramatic event, Boncel Benjamin created history by becoming the only Inter Dominion winner promoted to victory after a protest was successfully lodged against Expensive Ego, which was first past the post.

Thanks to Captains Mistress’ moment in the spotlight, Grimson has joined Brian Hancock and Mark Purdon as the only trainers with three Inter Dominion winners.

Hancock was the first to achieve the feat thanks to Thorate in 1990, Weona Warrior in ’94 and Our Sir Vancelot ’97.

Our Sir Vancelot was also triumphant in ’98 and ’99 to become the first triple winner.

Purdon won with Smolda in 2016, Lazarus in ’17 and Ultimate Sniper in ’19, with the latter co-trained by Natalie Rasmussen.

Rasmussen also created a slice of Inter Dominion history by guiding Blacks A Fake to a remarkable four Inter Dominion wins in 2006, ’07, ’08 and ’10.

Cameron Hart also joined Purdon and Rasmussen as the third driver to partner two Inter Dominion winners since 2000.
