A COUPLE of easy days before a showdown awaits lightly-raced trotter Gun Slinger.

Fresh from his victory in Maryborough yesterday, Gun Slinger’s ‘high noon’ moment will come during the Australasia Breeders’ Crown.

Heats of the series are scheduled to be conducted at the same venue on August 15 ahead of a $100,000 Final on August 24.

“He’s taken a little longer to come to hand, but is a nice type,” trainer Anton Golino said.

“I was happy with his run in Maryborough and expect him to improve from it.

“It’s another step up for the Breeders’ Crown in 10 days time, but I’m sure he will be competitive.”

With Jason Lee holding the reins, Gun Slinger was caught in the ‘death seat’ early before being slotted to the pegs to trail the leader, Kyvalley Shaunie, as the field raced in ‘Indian file’.

Gaining a saloon passage along the sprint lane, Gun Slinger shot to a three-metre win from the front runner, with Magical five-and-a-half metres away third.

Rating 2:06.8 over the 2190-metre stand, the freshman took his record to a win and two placings from four starts.

“I’m pretty pleased with that,” Golino said. “He got a good run along and finished it off as I’d expect him to.

“He will benefit from that run and be better again next time, which he will need to be.”

By Muscle Hill from Shezoneoftheboyz, the colt is named after an American-based friend of Golino’s.

“During my time in America there was a guy who always had his thumbs in his jean pockets, so he was called Gunslinger because of it,” Golino explained.

“This horse was just named after him.”
