HIGHLY-TOUTED pacer Ignatius will make his racing return on Friday night.

Send for a spell following his luckless Breeders’ Crown campaign last August, Ignatius is set to contest the open class event in Launceston.

Satisfied with the gelding’s progress, which includes two trial wins, trainer Todd Rattray is confident Ignatius can register a first-up win despite his second row draw.

“I’m pretty happy with the way he has come up,” Rattray said. “His work has been solid and he has trialled well, including qualifying from the stand.

“The draw hasn’t made it easy on him and it is a solid field, but he will go close.

“That said, whatever he does this week he will certainly improve on. It will take a few runs to get his fitness right up.”

As has been the trend with the son of Roll With Joe, he will be sent to Rattray’s brother, James, in New South Wales to prepare for a feature campaign.

Australasia’s premier four-year-old event – Chariots Of Fire – is at the top of Ignatius’ hit list.

“At this stage he will only have the one run here before he heads to James,” Rattray explained.

“That way he can have time to settle in and get a run or two up there before the Chariots heats are on in late February.”
