“His brain isn’t at the same level”

IT’S been a 50-50 battle this campaign, but based on yesterday’s Club Menangle result one party is claiming the advantage.

To keep the description as ‘family friendly’ as possible, the best term when referring to young trotter Finn Runs Red would be “wayward”.

Displaying his share of ability, Finn Runs Red can be his own worst enemy in the manners department, much to the dismay of co-trainer Joe Rando, who used some colourful terminology regarding the three-year-old.

Having his fourth start for the term, Finn Runs Red registered his second win – having broken stride during the other two outings.

“He’s a difficult horse,” Rando, who prepares his team with his wife Mary, said. “He’d have to be the hardest horse I’ve broken in!

“The ability is there but his brain isn’t at the same level at this point.

“We did a bit of work on him again after his last run when he galloped and he went terrific yesterday.

“I think we’re starting to win with him.”

With Cameron Hart holding the reins, Finn Runs Red was given time to settle into his stride from the outside of the front row before being sent forward to find the lead.

Never seriously challenged once in front, the son of Trixton completed a seven-metre win from Gardena Ronda.

Our Quick Cash was seven-and-a-half metres away third in 2:01 over 2300 metres.

“He was caught wide for a while and I started wondering if he was ever going to come down,” Rando said. “But it was a top drive from Cam.

“Once he got to the front he travelled beautifully and never looked like going off stride.

“That was his first time over the distance and we’re pleased with the way he handled it.”
