A TRIP across the border is on the cards for promising trotter Jerichos Trumpet.

Following the gelding’s success in yesterday’s Wedderburn Trotters’ Cup, trainer Zac Steinhuis revealed his plans for Jerichos Trumpet, which include an interstate trek.

Should the four-year-old compete to expectations this weekend Steinhuis will head to Globe Derby for the South Australia Trotters’ Cup.

The time-honoured feature is part of a sensational February 9 card which includes the Pacing Cup and Derby.

“I’m very happy with the way he went at Wedderburn,” Steinhuis said. “He will go around in the Wangaratta Cup on Sunday, and if goes well enough, I will go SA for the Trotters’ Cup with him.

“He is only four, so is at least a year away from his best, but he will benefit from a season of going around in the Cups.”

Driven by Ryan Duffy during his latest victory, Jerichos Trumpet began well from the tapes only to break stride soon after the start to settle midfield as Fratellino worked to the lead.

Angled to the outside along the back straight, the son of Shadow Play sustained a strong sprint to score by two-and-a-half metres from Fratellino, with Jackson Square a head away third.

A Group One winner last season, Jerichos Trumpet took his record to nine victories and four seconds from 21 starts by rating 2:03.2 over 2555 metres.

“He got away well enough, but went off stride when the one on his inside came at him quickly,” Steinhuis said. “After that he put in a faultless run and won really well.

“I’ve always had an opinion of him and think he can get better as he gains more experience.”
