AN INTERSTATE trip is on the cards for promising pacer Cullenburn.

Unbeaten from two Australian starts following his victory in last night’s Carousel Final at Tabcorp Park Menangle, Cullenburn has been aimed at Queensland’s riches by trainer Craig Cross.

Cross has earmarked the Four-Year-Old Championship at Albion Park on July 20 as Cullenburn’s primary target, with a start in the Sunshine Sprint a week earlier a possibility.

Until then the son of 1998 Miracle Mile winner Christian Cullen will continue to make his way through the local grades.

“There are suitable races for him during the Winter Carnival in Queensland in July,” Cross said. “The Four-Year-Old Championship is definitely one of them.

“Depending on how he goes between now and then we will look at other races as well.

“He will have a couple more runs in Sydney before he heads off to Brisbane.”

With Luke McCarthy in the cart, Cullenburn began quickly to lead from barrier five before being eased to take a trail behind the favourite, Sicario.

After enjoying the run of the race behind the pacemaker, the entire gained a saloon passage along the pegs to score by a half-neck from the fast-finishing Always Flashing.

In a ‘blanket’ finish, Times Stride was a neck away third in 1:54.4 over 2300 metres.

“He went really well and I’m very happy with him,” Cross said. “I thought he would run top three, I just wasn’t sure he could beat the favourite.

“Once he got to the front and then sat on the favourite’s back I knew he’d finish off like he did.

“He’s a nice horse which is quite speedy and has done some work in races.

“He hasn’t done much racing so I expect him to keep developing as he goes along.”
