TOMORROW night’s Tabcorp Park Melton meeting is poised to provide an intriguing battle.

In what shapes as their final outing before the Inter Dominion, Victoria’s two highest ranked contenders will clash in the Popular Alm Free-For-All.

Both fresh from wins at their last start, Shadow Sax and San Carlo will go head-to-head over 2240 metres.

Shadow Sax was listed at five during the third round of Inter Dominion rankings released by Harness Racing Victoria a fortnight ago, with San Carlo next in line at six.

Heats of the prestigious Championship are scheduled to begin in Melton on December 1.

As for their pending encounter, Shadow Sax has drawn barrier five for trainer Emma Stewart, who is confident the son of Shadow Play can head into the Inter Dominion on a successful note.

“I couldn’t be happier with his condition,” Stewart said. “He’s had four runs this time in and is in great shape.

“Friday night will top him off perfectly going into the Inter in a couple of weeks.

“The draw could prove tricky as there is a bit of speed inside him, but he’s going well enough to win from there.”

Citing San Carlo as the one to beat, Stewart believes Audi Hare could hold the key to the race.

A quick beginner, Audi Hare will come from the pole, with San Carlo drawn to follow him through from the inside of the second row.

Audi Hare finished third behind Shadow Sax at his last outing, while San Carlo captured the Yarra Valley Cup for trainer Stephen O’Donoghue.

“San Carlo is the one to beat,” Stewart said. “He’s been great this time in.

“Whether he stays on the pegs and possibly gets a trail or comes around the field we will have to wait and see.

“It could all come down to whoever gets the right run on the night.”
