EVEN co-trainer Shane Tritton is unsure if Gods Spirit will break any records at Tabcorp Park Menangle this afternoon.

Making a scintillating debut at the same circuit last week, Gods Spirit covered the mile in 1:51 in what doubled as his first start eight months.

It was also just the second time the three-year-old had made a trip to the races!

With Lauren Tritton holding the reins, Gods Spirit scored by 26-and-a-half metres to be four-tenths of a second outside the Australasian record held by Border Control and Our Waikiki Beach.

Stating the son of Tintin In America has “improved dramatically” from the outing, Tritton has no doubt Gods Spirit is capable of smashing the record.

In fact, Tritton is positive the gelding can become the first of his age to break through the 1:50 barrier.

“We are not going out with intention to break anything,” Tritton said. “With that in mind, he would break 1:50 now if you asked him to.

“At this stage we’re trying to get him to settle in races, which he did last week and it was great.

“He is pure speed, a real excitement machine, and I struggle to say I’ve had a faster horse.

“If can settle and run those times he can be anything and we’re looking at the long range with him, not just running records.”

Set to compete against older rivals, Gods Spirit has drawn to lead throughout from barrier four.

“We couldn’t be happier with his condition,” Tritton said. “He’s improved dramatically since last week and is more than ready to run a quick time if needed.

“It is fairly windy though, so it’s not inducive to records. We’ll just have to see how the race plays out.”
