FANS of the 21 Jump Street movies would have backed a handy winner at Hamilton yesterday.
Scoring upon debut at $6.30 Mynameisjeff is named after a line in the franchise’s sequel, which has developed into a meme and Youtube template.
Channing Tatum delivers the awkward line when struggling to pass as a Mexican while under cover!
There were no such awkward moments during the race for the equine ‘Jeff’, however, as he completed an eye-catching win for trainer-driver, Matthew Craven.
Beginning quickly to lead from barrier six, Mynameisjeff was then eased to take a trail behind prohibitive favourite, Go In Style.
“When I put one on his butt and asked him to come out at the start he took off like a cannon,” Craven said. “He’s never gone that quick in his life.”
Finishing strongly along the sprint lane, the son of Rock N Roll Heaven scored by a short half-head from Go In Style, with Foolish Pleaseure 13-and-a-half metres away third in 1:54.5 over 1660 metres.
“I like him but he was there to gain experience and see what happens,” Craven said. “I wasn’t expected that at all…he’s only had one pretty quiet trial.”
Unfortunately for connections Mynameisjeff’s maiden performance didn’t end as they’d like with the three-year-old pulling up sore.
“He didn’t pull up as good as I’d like so he is off to the paddock now,” Craven said. “It might even be a blessing in disguise as this is only his first preparation and time could be his friend.”
