CONCESSION reinsman Corey Johnson will find himself in unfamiliar territory at Globe Derby on Saturday night.
Developing into one of South Australia’s leading young drivers this season, Johnson has established a niche as a long shot specialist.
After registering his initial win with Emerging Art, which upstaged his more fancied rivals at $51.10, Johnson also scored with Alemeria, which paid $68.70 on the tote.
Another of Johnson’s winners – Thebattlesjusbegun – was on the fifth line of betting when victorious.
This weekend Johnson will again be in the cart behind Thebattlesjusbegun, which is tighter in the market.
Despite his inside of the back row draw, the son of Courage Under Fire is the second elect at $3.80!
“The draw will make it tough as he prefers to be up front,” Johnson said. “He came home well along sprint lane last start to win, so hopefully he can finish strongly again.
“With a bit of luck we won’t get caught in a pocket on the pegs and will get a chance to being doing our best in the straight.”
Citing Smackwater Jack as the one to beat, Johnson also expects Torque Tothe Starz to play a role in the finish.
Smackwater Jack is the $1.80 favourite from barrier three, with Torque Tothe Starz at $5 from gate four.
“Smackwater Jack has looked pretty good since he got here and has drawn to be the one to beat again,” Johnson said.
“Torque Tothe Starz is always consistent and after two runs from a long spell will be fitter for this.
“We’ll need a bit of luck, but if it comes our way, we’ll let them know we’re there.”
