FRESH from his first-up win in last month’s Strathalbyn Trotters’ Cup, King Of The Roses is expected to prove too good for his opposition at Globe Derby on Saturday night.

After nearly 21 months on the sidelines, King Of The Roses overcame a 20-metre handicap to capture the country feature for trainer Les Harding.

Beginning extremely well, the seven-year-old was pushed forward by driver Dani Hill to stride to the front soon after start as the early leader, Coolbreeze, made a mistake.

Never in danger, King Of The Roses recorded a 20-metre win from his stablemate Cold Crusher, with Chuck Wagon a further 30 metres behind him.

Owned by prominent couple Merv and Meg Butterworth, King Of The Roses had only been in the Harding stable “for about eight weeks” after being worked up in Victoria.

The Butterworths also own Cold Crusher.

“I just forgot about King Of The Roses,” Merv said. “He had a small muscle issue, so I had him turned out for six months and it just turn out to be longer.

“He had a few months pre-training in Victoria before we sent him to Les, but there was never an intention for there to be so long between races.”

As for his pending assignment, King Of The Roses will again begin from the 20-metre mark, with Merv confident the son of Monarchy can continue his winning return.

“Les tells me his work since his first start has been great and he will definitely be better again this weekend,” Merv said. “Cold Crusher is also going well and will be hard to beat from the 10-metre line”

While he didn’t specifically arrive in South Australia to target the Country Cups Circuit, if his first win is any indicator King Of The Roses will be a very strong contender throughout the coming provincial features.
