Lightly-raced trotter to continue perfect record
LIGHTLY-RACED trotter Mackel Sonny is expected to have no difficulty maintaining his perfect record when he heads to Club Menangle tomorrow.
Although first-up from a spell, Mackel Sonny’s previous campaign, couple with some recent solid trials, is enough to suggest the son of Majestic Son is a class above his opposition.
Trained by champion horseman Luke McCarthy, Mackel Sonny made a winning debut in Goulburn last September.
Two subsequent starts netted victories at Club Menangle and in Geelong, with an average winning margin of 18 metres.
“He is a nice type on the way up,” McCarthy said. “There is a lot to like about him.
“He’s still low on the National Rating System, so I’ll find the right races and ease him through the grades.
“How far he can get remains to be seen, but he’ll go a fair way.”
To be driven by McCarthy, Mackel Sonny has drawn awkwardly in barrier five, but is likely to be sent forward in search of the lead.
Flash Kyvalley, which boasts two wins and a pair of third from his last four outings, shapes as the main danger from gate three.
On the subject of well-performed trotters in the McCarthy stable, Constantinople continued his impressive start to the season with a strong victory last Saturday night.
With McCarthy holding the reins, Constantinople scored by four-and-a-half metres from Funky Monkey, with Sunny Gee nine metres away third.
Completing consecutive wins, the son of Trixton rated 1:59.5 over 2300 metres.
Connections of the seven-year-old have now set their sights on short and long term key targets.
Winner of the unofficial Trotters’ Inter Dominion Consolation at Albion Park last December, Constantinople will be worked towards another crack at the series later this year.
Although a Pacers’ Consolation was conducted, squaregaiters which didn’t make the Final contested a $30,000 Free-For-All on Finals night.
With the 2024 Championship to be staged at Club Menangle – Constantinople’s home track – a pathway is already being mapped.
That schedule includes The Hammerhead in Menangle on March 9, with the $100,000 feature part of the stellar Miracle Mile program.
