DEFENDING champion Majordan has opened as the favourite for Friday night’s Newcastle Mile.

The Kevin Pizzuto-trained son of Art Major is the $1.80 elect with TAB Fixed Odds over stablemate Picard at $2.20.

Majordan and Picard are the only runners under double figures, with Maximan on the third line from betting from barrier six.

Both pacers have drawn beside each other with Majordan to begin from three and Picard to come out of four.

Driver Chris Geary is pleased with Majordan’s starting position.

“It’s really good,” Geary said. “He comes out of barrier two with the removal of the emergency so hopefully he can push forward and be handy.

“It looks a pretty suitable race for him.”

Majordan set the Newcastle track record when winning last year’s edition in 1:51.4.

This year’s Newcastle Mile received a major prizemoney boost and will carry a purse of $100,000 making it the only Group One of all three racing codes in the Hunter Region.

The winner will also receive an automatic invitation to the $1million Miracle Mile at Tabcorp Park Menangle on March 2.

Picard, which will be driven by Todd McCarthy, is unbeaten from two runs this season, including last weekend’s Hondo Grattan Stake in 1:49.4.

The son of Roll With Joe is having his final outing before next week’s Chariots Of Fire in Menangle.
