ONCE destined for the ‘the rubbish bin’, Atomic Julia is making the most of her extended opportunities.

Retired from racing and set to become an embryo recipient, Atomic Julia failed to respond to her new role in the breeding barn.

As such, the decision was made to ‘dog’ the six-year-old until veterinarian Bill Harbison took an interest in her.

Having recently retired, Harbison figured he’d give training a try and selected Atomic Julia as his first stable occupant.

“I’ve been working with other people’s horses for 45 years, and now that I am retired, I thought I’d have a bit of fun myself and train one,” Harbison said.

“This mare got chucked in the rubbish bin as she was no good, but rather than dog her, I thought I’d give her a try and now as they say, ‘the rest is history’.

“She’s nowhere near being a superstar, but she’s doing well for a rescue job!”

Driven by Dani Hill at Globe Derby yesterday, Atomic Julia registered her second win for Harbison by causing an upset at $11.

Leading throughout from the pole, the daughter of Julius Caesar scored by a metre-and-a-half from Final Round.

Huey Trevor was seven-and-a-half metres away third in 1:58 over 1800 metres.

“She showed her best yesterday, which was great to see,” Harbison said. “I always give her a chance because she works the house down at home, but it is difficult to get her to perform at the track.

“That’s only the second time Dani has driven her and she has won both times, so she seems to get along well with Dani.

“Her win was her second for me and my second as a trainer, so we’re going along alright together.”
