Massive class rise creates ‘interesting’ scenario

UNFORESEEN circumstances have created an ‘interesting’ scenario for trainer Trevor Munday.

Originally planning to contest an age-restricted event with promising filly Crunchie Diva at Club Menangle on Saturday night, Munday will now watch the youngster compete against older rivals.

“She’s up massively in grade,” Munday said. “I had her nomination for her own age, but unfortunately the fillies’ race didn’t hold up.

“I got a call explaining what was going on and that another race was an option, so I chucked her in the deep end against older horses.

“I’ve given her five starts since we bought her from Gary and Debbie Quinlan in Victoria and she has exceeded expectations, so hopefully that will be the case again.

“We never guessed she would win her first four for us.”

Star young reinsman Will Rixon has been booked to partner the daughter of Captain Crunch, which will begin from gate two.

Despite leading in the majority of her starts, Munday stated Crunchie Diva is likely to be driven “with a sit”.

“I don’t think she has followed a helmet since I’ve had her,” Munday said. “So it will be interesting to see how she can follow the speed.

“Her last start when she finished fourth in Bathurst after leading was the first time she had been over the longer trip and it found her out a bit.

“She went okay without going as well, but they tell me it does take it out of them around Bathurst the first time.

“Dropping back to the shorter trip should help, but as I said, she is jumping up in class a fair bit.”
