A RECORD performance in yesterday’s Hannon Memorial has reaffirmed Spankem’s position as New Zealand Cup favourite.
Leading throughout the Oamaru-based feature, the five-year-old had his rivals gasping for breath with a brilliant 53.3-second last half.
With co-trainer Mark Purdon holding the reins, Spankem found the front during the middle stages on his way to a 3:14.4 win for the 2600-metre stand.
As such the Miracle Mile champion equaled Classic Cullen’s 2010 track record.
Purdon co-trains Spankem with Natalie Rasmussen.
“It was a pretty nice run,” Purdon said. “I’m very pleased with how he went and felt throughout the race.
“He’s a very quick horse which can hold his speed.
“He will certainly keep improving as we work towards the Cup in November.”
Expected to have several lead-up starts heading into the Shaky Isles’ premier event, Spankem is also on target for the Inter Dominion.
The prestigious series is scheduled to begin with heats in Auckland on November 29, with the Final set down for December 14.
“He has a big campaign ahead of him and hopefully he can have a big season,” Purdon said.
