PLANS remain modest with Mach Alert despite his recent good form.

Winner of his last two starts, including Albion Park last night, Mach Alert will continue to contest local events with his days of travelling interstate behind him according to trainer Ian Gurney.

“I won’t be taking him anywhere anymore,” Gurney said. “He is an 11-year-old and has his issues which go with age.

“As he has shown, he can still match with the younger ones, but he is better off racing closer to home.

“With that in mind, I don’t have any specific plans and will just find what I can for him.”

Driven by Kellie Dawson, Mach Alert began quickly to find the front from barrier four as Glenferrie Hood settled on his outside.

Digging deep along the home straight, the son of Mach Three scored by two metres from Glenferrie Hood, with The Space Invader two-and-a-half metres away third.

Rating 1:52.9 over 1660 metres, the gelding stretched his record to 30 wins and 21 placings from 98 starts.

“He has been racing a lot better than his form suggests and his last couple of starts show the difference getting better draws or runs can make,” Gurney said.

“He’s been coming home in 54 seconds and still been unable to get into the race as the leaders are running that fast.

“This time around he was the one setting the quick time which made it harder for the others behind him to make up the ground…that’s just how it is these days.”
