POPULAR reinsman Ken Rogers was glad to get a ‘monkey off his back’ in Port Pirie tonight.
Having run second in “some ridiculous amount” of Southern Cross Finals, Rogers was thrilled to capture a leg of the Group Two.
Rogers’ success came with Victorian trained freshman Ona Highway Tohell.
“I was rapt to finally win one,” Rogers said. “The Finals have just been one of the races which keep getting away from me.
“I reckon I have run about 16 seconds….some ridiculous amount.”
Working forward from barrier five, Ona Highway Tohell was allowed to stroll to the lead as Whatabro was eased to take a trail.
Forced to dig deep during the latter stages Ona Highway Tohell completed a two-metre win from Whatabro.
Adam Crocker – owned by Harness Racing South Australia chairman Gary Crocker – was nine metres away third.
“He’s a nice little horse,” Roger said. “I can’t thank Emma enough for giving me the drive.”
“Emma” is record-breaking horsewoman Emma Stewart, who was pleased with the son of Betterthancheddar
“That was a good run from him in 1:56.1 over the mile,” Stewart said. “He will come home now and have an easy week.
“I’m not sure where he will head next, it will depends how he pulls up from this trip.”
