CONNECTIONS of classy trotter Constantinople will wait until after the weekend before making a decision on a Trans-Tasman trip.

With the son of Trixton offered a berth in the $575,000 TAB Trot in Cambridge on April 12, trainer Luke McCarthy stated he will confirm his intentions regarding the New Zealand raid after Saturday night’s Club Menangle meeting.

“It’s a nice position to be in,” McCarthy said. “There is good money to be won and he has shown he is competitive at the top level, so it is attractive that’s for sure.

“I’ve got him going around at Menangle on Saturday night, so I will see how he goes then before deciding.

“If he runs as well as he has been, we’ll be going, with the flight leaving on April 7.”

Runner-up in the Group One Hammerhead Mile around Menangle a fortnight ago, Constantinople won three of his previous four starts, including the Trotters’ Inter Dominion Consolation at Albion Park.

To be driven by McCarthy, the seven-year-old has drawn barrier eight over 1609 metres.

“It is never ideal to be drawn wide, but he will have to be good enough to overcome it,” McCarthy said. “If he can’t put in a good run against this field, then it is hard to justify going to New Zealand and facing much tougher opposition.”
