EVEN the wrath of stewards could do little to dampen Corey Johnson’s mood at Globe Derby tonight.
Successful with Emerging Art in the opening event of the card, Johnson received a fine for unacceptable whip action.
But that meant little to the wet behind ears reinsman.
Making his 28th appearance Johnson completed his maiden voyage to the winners’ circle.
“I’m just so thrilled,” Johnson said. “To get my first winner is amazing and something I will never forget.
“I can’t thank Nick enough for giving me the drive.”
Nick is astute horseman Nick Tardio, who prepared Emerging Art for his upset win.
Leading throughout from the pole, Emerging Art scored by a half-head from Dougs Limousine, with Eastbro Tex two metres away third.
Paying $51.10 on the tote, the son of Modern Art rated 1:58.7 over 1800 metres to take his record to 15 wins and 18 placings from 121 starts.
A graduate of the pony trot circuit, 16-year-old Johnson balances his time with horses with his studies at Saint Patrick’s Technical College where he aims to become a mechanic.
