ACCORDING to his wife, prominent owner Merv Butterworth may not be fully aware their classy pacer Copy That has won tonight’s The Race at Cambridge Raceway.

    MERV and MEG BUTTERWORTH

Having undergone a hernia operation in Victoria, Butterworth was in recovery as Copy That captured the $1million event.

Although he was able to view the feature via telecast, Meg is unsure if Butterworth is lucid enough to comprehend the moment.

“He was in recovery and they let him use his I-pad to watch it, but I think he was a bit too out of it,” Meg explained.

“He did talk to Ray (Green, trainer), Blair (Orange, driver) and Trevor (Casey, slot owner), but I don’t know how much sense he was making.

“I’m not sure he fully understands at the moment and will have to watch the replay in the morning.”

In what has been a day of stress and elation, Butterworth is in good condition, while Copy That enhanced his reputation as a superstar.

After working to the lead from barrier four, Copy That completed a length-and-a-half win from Old Town Road, which trailed the pacemaker throughout.

Self Assured was two-and-a-half lengths away third in 1:54.3 over 2200 metres.

“It’s been a pretty emotional day,” Meg said. “It’s been stressful waiting for Merv’s operation and his recovery and an elated evening with such an amazing win.

“But it’s been nothing but good news in the end!”
