QUEENSLAND reinsman Paul Diebert received the perfect tonic at Albion Park during the weekend.

Although celebrations were kept lowkey as a result of Diebert being “crook”, the young driver managed to forget his ailments for a short period after partnering Ohoka Punter to glory in the Sunshine Sprint.

Breaking a drought from the winners’ circle, the veteran provided Diebert with his initial Group One success.

“I can’t believe I’ve won a Group One,” Diebert said. “It’s something we all dream about, but I never thought I would do it.

“I had a bit of a celebration after it, but I’m crook with the flu, so didn’t do too much…next weekend maybe!

“When I got home a couple of hours later and the rush wore off I was feeling pretty ordinary again.”

Beginning solidly from the pole, Ohoka Punter gained the run of the race behind his stablemate, Colt Thirty One, which found the lead from barrier two.

Angled into the passing lane during the latter stages the son of Bettors Delight sprinted to a metre-and-a-half win from Colt Thirty One, with Watch Pulp Fiction two metres away third.

“He did a bit of work to hold the leader’s back and then finished it off great,” Diebert said.

“He’s had a few chances to win this season and hasn’t quite finished it off, but he found the line well this time.”

Registering his first win since last October, Ohoka Punter rated 1:53.2 over 1660 metres to take his record to 27 wins and 51 placings from 109 starts for earnings of $1,175,322.

Owner Kevin Seymour marked the occasion by announcing Ohoka Punter will stand at Egmont Park during the upcoming breeding season.

Winner of the 2016 Blacks A Fake, 2016 Shepaprton Cup, 2013 Victoria and Northern Derbys, Ohoka Punter’s service fee has been set at $2,000+GST with a bonus to breeders of three months fee agistment whilst on Stud.

Egmont is providing an equivalent bonus discount for interstate breeders.

By one of the most prominent stallions in Australasia in Bettors Delight, Ohoka Punter is bred on a ‘golden cross’ being from Millwood Minisota – a daughter of Christian Cullen.
