ONE pacer’s connections hope the result of one of sport’s greatest events is an omen ahead of another this weekend.

Cementing his status as an American National Football League legend, Patrick Mahomes led the Kansas Chiefs to their second Super Bowl success in three years by defeating the Philadelphia Eagles a few days ago.

At Club Menangle on Saturday night, the quarterback’s equine namesake – Mahomes – will aim for glory in his own Super Bowl, or as it is known in harness racing, the Chariots Of Fire.

Triumphant at four of his last six starts, Mahomes earned a berth in Australasia’s premier four-year-old event with a handy fourth in the Hondo Grattan Stake a fortnight ago.

Prepared by Peter Russo, the Australian Pacing Gold purchase was transferred to the Jack Trainor stable after his latest outing.

Trainor has been Mahomes’ regular driver while under Russo’s care.

With Trainor set to take the reins, Mahomes has drawn barrier six, but slots into five with the removal of the emergency.

Such is the depth of talent in the Group One, TAB Fixed Odds have the gelding among the outsiders at $51.

Widely-touted as the nation’s most exciting pacer, Captain Ravishing is a $1.22 favourite from the pole.

“He has proven himself a very nice horse all along, but this is by far his toughest test,” Trainor said. “The quality of the field is so strong that him being at $51 is close to the right quote.

“It’s hard to imagine Captain Ravishing being beaten, but we’ll be trying our best.

“We’ll need all the good luck while at the same time hoping Captain Ravishing has all the bad luck.”
