TALENTED horseman Brad Hewitt is hoping to be doing little more than “ridin’ shotgun” behind The Texas Ranger in Penrith tonight.

Hewitt will be sitting behind The Texas Ranger in a Kevin and Kaye Seymour Evolution Series heat, with the three-year-old drawn to find the lead from barrier two.

A last start winner in Canberra, The Texas Ranger is the second elect on early markets at $3.25, with Hewitt confident the son of American Ideal can make those odds look generous.

“He has come back much better this time in,” Hewitt said. “As a two-year-old he ran a few handy placings, but just needed more time to mature.

“I’ve been happy with him this preparation and expect him to continue to get better as he goes along.

“I’ll be going forward from there looking to get to the pegs, but whether he leads or has a sit will depend on how the others come out.”

Although he cites Colossal Stride as the one to beat, Hewitt rates rank outsider Artistic Cowboy as omen quinella material.

Colossal Stride is the $1.75 favourite for co-trainers Lauren and Shane Tritton despite drawing the outside of the front row.

Absent from the winners’ circle since last November, Artistic Cowboy is at $67 from the back line.

“Colossal Stride is the obvious danger,” Hewitt said. “He won at his last start and is likely to be going forward early.

“Artistic Cowboy is the logical one to be finishing alongside The Texas Ranger.”
