A FAVOURABLE draw has Tiger Tara in a strong position to make the most of a rare opportunity to complete a unique hat-trick at Tabcorp Park Melton on Saturday night.
Set to begin from barrier three in the A G Hunter Cup, Tiger Tara is aiming to become just the second pacer to win the state’s three majors of the season.
Triumphant in the Victoria Cup last October, Tiger Tara then returned to capture the Inter Dominion in December.
With the Inter Dominion hosted on a rotational basis, this is just the sixth time since 1974 – which marked the introduction of the Victoria Cup – the three events have been conducted simultaneously in the state.
The immortal Preux Chevalier is the only pacer to manage the feat, winning the trio of Group Ones during the 1984/85 season.
Preux Chevalier annexed the Victoria Cup – known as the Winfield Cup – followed by the Hunter Cup and Inter Dominion at Moonee Valley.
As for Tiger Tara he is a $1.55 favourite with TAB Fixed Odds in his bid to join the former great.
Winner of his two starts at Menangle since his Inter Dominion glory, Tiger Tara as thrilled trainer Kevin Pizzuto with his progress.
“I couldn’t be happier with him,” Pizzuto said. “He is in sensational shape and will be ready to run another big race.
“The draw is good and certainly gives Todd (McCarthy, reinsman) plenty of options at the start.
“All I can say is I wouldn’t swap him for any other horse in the race and whichever one can beat him will win!”
