NEXT month’s famed Redwood Classic heads the hit list for trotting freshman Powderkeg.

Speaking after Powderkeg’s Vicbred Super Series Final success at Tabcorp Park Melton just moments ago, trainer Lisa Miles outlined her plans for the two-year-old.

Along with Maryborough’s flagship event Powderkeg will be aimed at the Australasian Breeders’ Crown.

The Redwood Classic is scheduled to be run on August 4, with the Crown heats soon after.

“I’ll get him ready for the Redwood now,” Miles said. “He’ll have a few easy days after tonight before I sharpen him up again for that.

“Given it is still four weeks away I’ll probably find a race for him in between.

“After that we will look at the Breeders’ Crown which will be his last run for the season.”

With Miles holding the reins during his latest triumph, Powderkeg began quickly to lead from the pole before being eased to take a trail behind the favourite, Andover Sun, during the middle stages.

Angled to the outside along the home straight, Powderkeg sprinted to a six-and-a-half metre win from Andover Sun, with Dreamee eight metres away third.

Unbeaten from two starts for Miles the son of Muscle Hill rated 2:01.4 over 2240 metres

“That was a pretty good run from him,” Miles said. “He did well to lead and then relaxed in the trail before finishing it off strongly.

“It was pretty much a carbon copy of his run in the heat.

“He’s a colt which can be a bit full of himself, but he’s a nice type which should keep getting better.”

Bred and owned by Wyndown Stud, Powderkeg’s tally sits on two wins and a debut second from three starts for earnings of $57,031.
