FORMER star youngster Resurgent Spirit caused a major upset with his ‘state of origin’ win last night.
Prepared by Victorian horsewoman Kate Hargreaves, Resurgent Spirit returned to Hobart to capture a Tasmania Cup heat.
Resurgent Spirit began his career on the Apple Isle when prepared by breeder Roger Whitmore before being sent to Hargreaves 18 months ago.
In his first trip back across Bass Strait, the son of American Ideal scored at the mouth watering odds of $41.
“I knew he would run a good race and felt he could finish in the top three, but I didn’t expect him to win,” Hargreaves said. “It was quite surreal.”
With Hargreaves’ subordinate Alex Ashwood holding the reins, Resurgent Spirit began well from his 10-metre mark before gaining the perfect trail as War Dan led and Sicario worked on his outside.
Coming with a well-timed run along the home straight, Resurgent Spirit scored by a metre from Sicario, with War Dan a half-head away third in 2:02.8 over 2579 metres.
“He got the right trip and was good enough to make the most of it,” Hargreaves said.
“If he has everything go his way and gets a similar run there is no reason why he can’t win the Final.
“He is still working up to peak fitness so he will benefit from the run and will be better for the Final.
“Sicario did all the work and we only just beat him but he is still the one to beat in the Final.”
