BECOMING just the second pacer to make a clean sweep of the New South Wales Breeders’ Challenge Finals, Ignatius has the opportunity to claim a slice of history next season.

Winner of the two and three-year-old Finals, Ignatius completed the hat-trick in the four-year-old decider at Tabcorp Park Menangle today.

As such the son of Roll With Joe joined Lettucerockthem which was the only triple winner thanks to his victories in 2013, ‘14 and ’15.

Although the futurity was launched in 2008, the four-year-old series was only added in 2013.

During the interim, Captain Joy (2008 and ‘09) and Vertigal (2010 and ’11) captured the two divisions available.

Thanks to the vision of administrators, a five-year-old leg has been added with the $100,000 feature to be run in the Riverina.

“The five-year-old series has come along at a pretty good time,” trainer James Rattray said. “It’ll be nice if he can win that one as well.

“There’s a lot of racing to be had between now and then, but it is something we will set him for when the time comes.”

Driven by Rattray during his latest win, Ignatius was caught two-back along the three-wide from his outside of the front row draw before being eased to the ‘death seat’ as Bright Energy led from barrier three.

With the pair matching strides along the home straight, Ignatius grabbed the lead in the shadows of the post to score by a neck, with Sicario six metres away third in 1:51.6.

“It’s been a tough week, so this is a nice way to end it,” Rattray said. “The semi-final was a tough run for him but he came through it ok and was at his best today.

“It’s on to Queensland now which we’re looking forward to.”
