BATHURST Harness Racing Club is abuzz with plans to host the $100,000 TAB Western Regional Championships series heats in two weeks’ time.

The qualifiers are scheduled for May 1 with trainers turning their attention to the series with their eligible horses to get runs under their belt over the next fortnight in readiness for the rich feature.

Mat Rue’s in-form Bathurst stable is aiming three runners at the Championships, excited that they are right on their doorstep.

Rue is currently experiencing his strongest ever start to a season as a trainer, already boasting 21 winners since January 1.

Rue is targeting the series with Mighty Atom, Deepwater Cam and Tolkowsky, all of whom are in top form.

Tolkowsky was bred by Trevor Swan’s Elite Bloodstock and is raced by a group of Rue’s most loyal clients including Wagga Harness Racing Club President Barry McColl and appears to be an up-and-coming star for his stable.

The four-year-old has only been lightly raced due to a minor setback last season but from four starts to date has recorded two wins and two second placings.

“The Regional Championships provide a great opportunity for the locals to race for some serious prizemoney, especially for that grade of horse,” said Rue.

“We will be aiming three at it this year.

“I am not sure how they will rank in the scheme of things, but they are all going really well and deserve a crack.

“Tolkowsky is a horse we are looking forward to seeing his progression.

“He has only had four starts and won his first two before he suffered an illness, and we tipped him out for a spell.

“It was the right move as he has come back really well.”

Ideal Timing is a full younger brother to Tolkowsky and will be one of the favoured runners in Race 7 at Bathurst tonight.

He is on a quick back-up from racing at Young last Friday night where he put a space on his rivals, scoring by 36 metres and recording an impressive 1:56.7-mile rating.

“He is a really nice little horse,” said Rue.

“We have had our issues with him as well and he can do the odd thing wrong.

“But the win at Young was enormous and barring bad luck, I think he can back it up despite his awkward second line draw.

“The spacious Bathurst track will help his cause.”
