EXCITING freshman Gimondi has been scratched from today’s Tabcorp Park Menangle program.
Winner of his three outings for trainer Blake Fitzpatrick, the trotter was a short priced favourite in a Foundation Series heat.
The son of Peak Dnk won a heat of the series at the same venue on April 16, with each of his wins registered around Menangle.
Although Gimondi has suffered a setback Fitzpatrick hopes to have the two-year-old ready for the Foundation Final on June 8.
“He has a bit of an infection in one of his legs so I wasn’t going to take a risk with him today,” Fitzpatrick said.
“At this stage he shouldn’t miss much work and should still be right for the Final in a few weeks.”
Following his appearance in the Group Three Gimondi will be primed for a Victorian campaign.
Along with the Breeders’ Crown in August, Fitzpatrick has taken aim at Maryborough’s famed Redwood Classic.
“He’s been a surprise packet so far,” Fitzpatrick said. “Every time he has been taken off the farm he’s gotten better.
“He’s always trotted nicely, but is lazy and hard to get a gauge on.
“All going well he will be given a freshen-up after the Foundation Final before we go to Victoria for the Redwood and Breeders’ Crown.
“There are some nice two-year-old trotters this year so he will have to be on his game just to be competitive.”
Gimondi’s scratching leaves Moment In The Sun as Fitzpatrick’s sole runner today, with the squaregaiter a strong chance.
“If she steps she will be very hard to beat,” Fitzpatrick said. “She can be iffy from stand, but I’m pleased with her work and expect a good showing from her.”
