MIGHTY mare Stylish Memphis threw her name at the Miracle Mile selectors with a mighty effort to win tonight’s $200,000 Queen Elizabeth II Mile at Tabcorp Park Menangle.
Trainer-driver Jack Trainor was a relieved man after Australasia’s favourite – and best – mare scored the strongest of wins, overcoming the fast-finishing Spellbound (Stuart McDonald) and surprise packet B K Swy (Josh Gallagher), scoring by a head to make it back-to-back wins in Australia’s richest mares’ race.
While the mile rate, 1:51.9 didn’t break any track records, it was the manner in which she did the job that would have ensured she had probably done enough to earn another crack at the Miracle Mile.
“There’s just that extra bit of pressure when you are the trainer as well as the driver,” said Trainor as he brought the star mare back to the presentation area.
“She has done wonders for me, this mare and I just love having her around.
“We got a chequered passage and new lost momentum at one stage but this horse does not know how to lose.
“My heart was in my mouth a bit, I admit, as I felt like everyone out there was just trying to beat us, which I guess they were.
“Hopefully that gets us another crack at the Miracle Mile. I feel like she couldn’t do much more.
“And if we’re lucky enough to make it, well, we’ll be there, for sure.”
