FRESH from last Saturday night’s Geelong Cup trifecta, premier trainer Emma Stewart is chasing another provincial feature.
While a trifecta is out of the question this weekend, Stewart’s pair are favoured to fill the quinella in Sunday’s Stawell Cup.
Triumphant in Geelong, Phoenix Prince will be joined by Code Black, which was runner-up to his stablemate during their recent clash.
Code Black’s two previous starts netted wins in the Maryborough and Yarra Valley Cups.
With a second in the Kilmore Cup on September 26 also to his credit, the son of Bettors Delight is well clear at the top of the Victoria Country Cups Championship, which carries a $35,000 bonus to the winner.
Driven to perfection by Kate Gath last time around, Phoenix Prince has drawn two along the back row.
Gath will take the drive behind the son of Somebeachsomewhere again in the Group Three.
Code Black will begin from the inside of the second line, with the stablemates the only runners from the back.
“Their draws could have been better, but that’s where we expected them to be given the preferential conditions,” Stewart said.
“Both have come through last week’s run just fine and have been training on well.
“As the Geelong Cup showed, there is not a lot between them and it will come down to which one gets the better run.
“That can be said for pretty much the entire field.”
