STRIKE while the iron is hot is the philosophy behind Toby Ryan’s interstate trip.
With a little bit of “before the rush” in the mix, the astute South Australian horseman is crossing the border to contest the opening race at Tabcorp Park Melton tomorrow night.
Ryan, who is also one of SA’s leading vets, is making the trek with talented pacer Dont Tell William.
In devastating form, the son of Bettors Delight has won his last six starts, prompting Ryan to “test the water” against tougher opposition.
“The timing was right to test the water against that grade,” Ryan said. “He is fit, in great form and has his confidence up.
“We may go home with our tail between our legs, but while everything stacks up we’ll give it a shot.
“We’re also leading into the breeding season, so going over now fits in well before the rush.”
To be driven by Ryan’s wife, Lisa, Dont Tell William has drawn to settle in a prominent position from barrier two.
“He has drawn well which has put a bit of buoyancy in our step,” Ryan said. “Hopefully from there he will get a good run and be able go well.”
Upon his return home Dont Tell William will be aimed at several features, including the country cups circuit.
“I will have to give him a bit of standing start practice, but I’ll will aim him at some of the cups,” Ryan said.
